Apple’s senior vice president of iPhone software, said the iPad is built “to run virtually every one of these apps unmodified right out of the box.” (But most app makers will re-write them for the larger screen)

Hmm. Iphone not only has VPN and RDP, it has TN3270 support as well. Good for us old mainframers.

I'm guessing that just because these apps are available for IPhone, they are not automatically enabled for Ipad.

Sigh... IBM ruled the world for a generation by providing upward compatibility.

Pompeii and Herculaneum were crushed to smoking cinders because their bulders were willfully blind to the evidence that Vesuvius was an active volcano. GRIN!

Lord Vader,

You make several excellent points. There are definitely jobs that the tablets won't handle. Some Android tablets are going to have USB for keyboards at least: http://ces2010.techradar.com/2010/01/08/hands-on-t-mobile-vega-android-tablet-review/

However, I doubt that we will have Android drivers for exotic usb-serial or usb-NIC devices anytime soon.

...there is one small problem; we are now no longer the knights who use serial...

on-site, you may need that DE9 connection, a serious no-go on any mini device, although an Apple dev could write you an app that goes DockPlug->USB/Serial dongle.

Also, coverage tends to sux0r in most colos around here, and you can't just plug those things into any handy RJ-45 socket.

Maybe the Android or Chrome pad will sport some additional I/O ports, but that's not the trend.

Back-closet geeks need back-closet tools...
